Do you want my English Bulldog puppies? Weirdest spam yet.
Permalink Posted on 09-22-2007 at 12:03:59 pm by Justin, 423 words, 26943 views

I received a most unusual email today:

Hello..

I am a nurse and my late grandma was a bulldog breeder, she died about 3 months ago and left behind a male and a female english bulldog ( Sire & Dam), the female bulldog recently had a litter of 6 puppies, they are so adorable, my job as a nurse cannot allow me to take of [sic] these puppies.

I want to find them loving homes, if you [are] interested in having them, please contact me immediately.

Have a nice day.

Celine

Note: The pic was not included.

The email was sent from celine1@inmail24.com with a reply-to: celine2@2itb.com. My first reaction was, "Aww, puppies!" I'm more of a cat person (See: Zeke use the toilet), but a friend was looking into getting a puppy recently, so I immediately hit reply. That was when I noticed the bizarre email addy and realized immediately that this was spam.

You have to understand that I get a lot of emails due to the Mortgage Lender Implode-O-Meter, so seeing an email about puppies only struck me as slightly more odd than the latest tip about a faltering lender.

My question is: am I naive? Missing something? Is there some black market for puppies? What is the point of a spammed email about English Bulldogs? Is there an embedded message about v1agra or hoodia (WTF is hoodia, anyway?)? Is this some new spam tactic? What is going on here?

Update 12:11 P.M., September 24, 2007

A reader has commented that she received a response from Celine after emailing her back. Celine (who responded using a third different email addy) said:

I would imagine that it's a variant of the old "419" advance-fee fraud; if you'd responded, they would probably have responded in turn with a sob-story requesting funds to ship the dogs to you. Obviously, the dogs would ultimately never arrive.

I would imagine Bulldogs were used due to their being a valuable breed.

You can get some important data on such people by looking at the source of the message, in the actual headers will be the actual servers used to send the mail. You can then view data about the IP addresses by using a WHOIS server, such as whois.arin.net.

More likely this is a blanket email. They will take any responses as valid email addresses and then either add them to their list or sell them to somebody else. Best not to respond.

Yes, this is a mass email. I got the same one today. I'm a dog rescuer, and my sister wants an English Bulldog, so my first reaction was wow!!!!!, but then I found your page. English Bulldogs sell for around $1,700 up due to the fact they can't breed themselves, you have to have it done through a vet and c-section. Nice plot for a scam though, I must admit...

Hi Justin,

We've recently been scammed by English Bulldogs scam her in Canada. I Live in New Brunswick Canada (north of Maine, USA), this woman who was selling 2 pups in Vancouver, British Columbia (North of Washington)wanted to instant Messanger us to know more about us to decide if she was going to give us the pups. Pups were free, all we had to do was pay for the shipping. I made the arrangements myself through a reputable airline Air Canada, they told me about $200 & to tell this woman Tina Kahn to give us the PRO BILL # (all items that are shipped have this) once she get back from airport. But when she got back from airport, the airport lost the pups. I knew then it was a scam. She needed my financial help finding the pups. I called the Royal Canadian Mounted Police & Phone Busters, they both said it was a nigerian scam. I'm glad we didn't tell our kids about the dogs, they would of been devasted. don't get me wrong, My husband & I were very devasted & pissed with people that do this. Even a FAKE airport (Pet Cameroon Delivery Service) contacted us that they were going to keep the dogs in quarantine for 6 months.... here is what I found about them:

http://www.helpmerick.com/fun_with_cameroon_pet_scams.htm

some people did get scammed out of money reading on that website.
